Abstract
Design oflayoutsfor cellular manufacturing systems (CMS) has not got the researcher's attention as much as cell formation in cellular manufacturing.For this lack of information on layout, the benefits of CMS cannot be validated. In this paper,a mathematical model formulated as multiobjective quadratic assignmentproblemfor the design oflayouts for cellularmanufacturing systems is proposed.A heuristic algorithm is developed to solve the problem using pairwise comparison. An attempt has been made to make the model practical by considering the production volume, transfer batch size and operation sequence of parts. The model is also capable of evaluating cellular layouts vis-à-vis functional layouts.
