Abstract
In this paper, an attempt has been made to design an algorithm to determine the best mix of kanban-sizes of the parts/products, which ensures the least totalcost. First, mean cycle time ofthe parts, mean line utilization of the processes, mean work-in-process inventories of the parts and the number of changeovers of each ofthe processes during simulation run with respect to a mix ofkanban sizes of parts are obtained using a simulation model. A cost based objective function is proposed using these statistics. Thisfunction represents the total cost ofthe system. Then, an algorithm is designed to determine the mix ofkanban sizes of the parts with the minimum total cost.
