Abstract

The study demonstrates the effect oftire pressure onfuel consumption. Thefuel consumption of an automobile involves a large number of parameters such as type ofengine, engine cc, vehicle weight, use offuel additives, fuel injection, tire pressure, tire condition, road condition, load with AC on/off, maintenance, etc. A preliminary study was done to understand the influence of external parameters such as road condition, load, speed and tire pressure forfuel economy. The experiment was carried out on a particular vehicle forfuel economy at different tire pressure; the data such as highway & city road mileage for load and speed were recorded. The data was used in an equation which sets a relation between tire under inflation and extra fuel consumption to determine the percentage extra fuel consumed. The study indicates that substantial benefit would accrue if car tire pressure are checked regularly, which include 1) Reduced petroleum consumption by over a million liters of petrol/year 2) Reduce greenhouse gas emissions 3) Increased road safety by decreasing the number of accidents. The resultindicate that the externalparameters have a significantly affect onfuel economy ofan automobiles.

Keywords- Fuel economy, tire pressure, tire condition.
