ATTRITION OF TECHNICAL HUMAN RESOURCES IN THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY - A REVIEW OF SOME SELECTED RESEARCH STUDIES.

M Basheer Ahmed Khan

Abstract

The phenomenon of attrition of technical human resources in the information technology industry has been a great challenge for the various firms in the industry and to retain the technical manpower, a series of measures have been enunciated in the industry worldwide. Some measures are age old while some are modern and innovative. As the issue was relevant and the competitive environment that opened up globally has evoked interest in the phenomenon, many empirical research studies were undertaken by the academia to understand the problem and the methodology used to combat attrition. These studies have been carried out under different logistic and population settings with inherent limitations for their extrapolation or comparison. In this paper an effort has been made to review some of the selected studies in the field that have been carried out since 1991 from abroad and 2000 from India and to report the major findings and summarize them. This review can be of significant use to researchers trying to further investigate the issue through any other empirical study with similar or varied hypotheses. This overview of literature provides a conceptual base for the future researchers.

Keywords- Attrition, Information Technology Industry, Technical Manpower, empirical studies.
