Abstract
Large quantity of Cast components are made of Cast Iron (C.I.) because of its inherent properties like ability to be cast in intricate shapes, vibration damping, self lubrication, easy availability, less cost etc. The casting process involves large number of parameters and quality of ferrous castings is dependent on the parameters related to sand, mould preparation, melting, moulding process etc. Appropriate selection of parameters and its accurate and consistent control is the difficult task to perform for getting defect free castings. Variation in these parameters gives rise to major defects like shrinkage, blow holes, inclusion etc. The root cause analysis needs to be done for correct selection of the parameters with the help of techniques like fish bone diagram, pareto analysis etc. In this paper effort is made to build detailed fish bone diagram for sand inclusion defect. It will help in selection and correction of the parameters responsible to eliminate the defect and improve productivity.
