Abstract
The aluminium matrix composites are classified as lightweight aluminium centric metal matrix composites. It has dual properties of metal and ceramic materials. Now a days, monolithic metals and conventional alloys have been replaced by aluminium metal matrix composites in many applications in the field of automobile and aerospace due to high strength to weight ratio, fracture limit, toughness, wear and sustaining properties at the higher temperature. The paper thus deals with the fabrication of aluminium metal matrix composites with reinforcement of TiB2 in varying percentage in aluminium alloy Al 1100 through the stir casting process. The mechanical and tribological properties were studied. The fabricated composite exhibited improved tensile strength and hardness whereas ductility reduced. The wear resistances of composites were found directly proportional to the weight percentages of TiB2 in developed aluminium matrix composites.Keywords- Friction stir casting, Wear, Hardness, Tensile strength, Impact strength.
